Toucan

The Keel-billed Toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus) is one of the most striking and iconic birds of Costa Rica, easily recognized by its large, colorful bill and lively behavior. This species inhabits humid forests and semi-open areas with tall trees, from lowlands to mid-elevations, where it finds food and suitable nesting sites.

In Costa Rica, there are six species of toucans: the Keel-billed Toucan, Chestnut-mandibled Toucan, Orange-billed Aracari, Collared Aracari, Yellow-eared Toucanet, and Emerald Toucanet. This diversity makes the country a privileged destination for toucan observation.

Foods consumed

The Keel-billed Toucan feeds mainly on fruits, although it also consumes insects, eggs, and small reptiles. Because of its diet, it plays an important role as a seed disperser, contributing to forest regeneration. It is often seen in pairs or small groups, moving through the canopy with short flights and announcing its presence with loud, distinctive calls

On our farm, it is common to see the Keel-billed Toucan, the Collared Aracari, and the Emerald Toucanet, a clear sign of healthy habitat conditions and abundant food sources. The presence of these species highlights the natural richness of the area and offers a unique opportunity to enjoy Costa Rica’s remarkable biodiversity.
